As you read this I’m likely at WordCamp US 2026, a conference for the WordPress community. In their own words:
WordCamp is a community-organized conference dedicated to WordPress, an open-source platform that powers 40% of the web. It’s a place for WordPress enthusiasts, users, developers, designers, and other participants to network, share ideas, and learn about WordPress.
I’ve been involved in and working in WordPress since 2009, yet I’ve only been to a handful WordCamps over the years. I’ve even volunteered at a few. They take place in a different city every year and this year’s event is in Phoenix, Arizona.
That’s right, Phoenix. In August. At least we’ll be inside, but the walk from the hotel to the conference center will be a sweaty one. I’ll carry a hoodie in my bag for inside and a neck fan for outside. So weird.
Still, I’m excited for the event itself (see below, lunch).
Why am I going?
Like most skills, web development is not a one-and-done dealio. The web is changing constantly, with new technologies being created at least every year. I need to keep up if I’m going to give my clients the best advice out there.
It’s not just about WordPress. This year’s conference is going to feature quite a few talks about AI and how it’s being integrated with web development. Whether or not I support the use of AI in creating and maintaining websites, it would be a disservice to my clients to stick my head in the sand and pretend it’s not happening. It’s happening. Web hosts are featuring it, Wix, Shopify, Squarespace, WordPress — they’re all on the AI bandwagon.
There’s plenty else to talk about besides AI. One presentation I’m particularly interested to see is on WordPress security. One can never know enough about keeping hackers locked out.
There’s also a lot of exciting content about accessibility, data privacy, legal issues, and just plain ol’ development.
In short, I learn about this stuff so my clients don’t have to.
Community
The other reason for attending WordCamp is to connect — and reconnect — with the people in the WordPress community. Since 2009 I’ve met folks from all over the planet who have taught me a lot. In my business it’s helpful to know people who are smarter than me, and I also get to help others when they need it as well.
Lunch
The last reason is that lunch is provided. And the fact that I’m almost always ready to eat is a major motivator. Not to mention the free coffee.
