Can AI Build Your Business Website? Yes—But Here’s What Happens After

Building a site with AI takes an afternoon. Keeping it secure and working takes ongoing attention most small business owners don’t expect.

Building a small business website with AI

Creating an online presence for your business can feel like a daunting task. A web designer may not be in your budget, especially when you’re first starting out. Thankfully, there are plenty of options out there for DIYing your website. To name a few, there’s:

  • Wix
  • Shopify
  • WordPress
  • SquareSpace
  • GoDaddy

If you’ve used any of those services in 2026, you likely noticed the AI component. In fact, most AI website-building services are so advanced, it’s a simple matter of answering some prompts about your business, your target demographic, and uploading a logo and some images. Voila! Aside from a few tweaks here and there, your website is launched.

It can seem like magic. Unfortunately, a website is not a set-it-and-forget it proposition. In the months and years ahead, you’re going to need to care for your website on a regular basis.

Your site is up. Can you keep it running?

Think about your car. Most likely you bought it ready to go, complete with windshield wipers and cupholders. Once you have those keys in hand, the car is not only yours to drive wherever you want, it’s also yours to maintain. If you neglect lube and oil changes for too long, you’ll have a very expensive fix on your hands. And sure, you can do your own lube and oil changes, but you could be missing hidden issues that an experienced mechanic might spot early on.

It’s the same with your website. Over time, software changes. Code changes. The web is always changing. Neglected too long, your website could become vulnerable to attacks, loss of functionality, and it could even start to look and sound dated. It’s not 1996, and your small business website isn’t merely a digital billboard on the web. It’s something that needs regular care and maintenance.

Using AI to maintain and fix your website

When you understand that your website needs regular updating, you might be thinking, “I used AI to build my site, I can use AI to keep it running.”

Well, yes and no. Here’s what you need to consider:

Where AI can help you

  • Code updates: AI coding assistants (like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, etc.) can write, review, and apply code changes reasonably well — especially for custom code, bug fixes, or small feature additions. The question is, will you know where to apply the code and how to tweak it if necessary?
  • Plugin/dependency updates: AI can help review changelogs, flag breaking changes, and even draft the update commands. But it still needs a human to actually run it, test the site afterward, and roll back if something breaks.
  • Content freshness: AI is good at helping rewrite stale copy, generate new blog posts, or refresh images and text to keep a site “looking current.” But will it sound human, and more importantly, will it still appeal to your preferreddemographic?
  • Database optimization: There are AI-assisted tools that can suggest query optimizations or flag bloated tables. Running that safely on a live production database still benefits from someone who understands the specific site’s setup.

Where AI falls short

  • Backups: AI doesn’t automatically know when to trigger one, verify it’s not corrupted, or store it somewhere safe. That’s an infrastructure/process problem, not an AI-can-answer-questions problem.
  • Security: AI can help identify a vulnerability if you ask it to review code, but it won’t monitor your site 24/7, patch a zero-day the moment it’s disclosed, or notice you’ve been hacked. Most compromised small-business sites get hit via plugin vulnerabilities that were patched days or weeks before the attack. Not to mention, someone has to actually apply that patch.
  • Judgment calls: “Does this update break my checkout flow?” or “Is this a real threat or a false positive?” still needs a human who understands your specific business and site.
  • Accountability when things break: If AI updates something and the site goes down, who notices, who fixes it, who’s responsible? There’s literally no one to talk to.

If you used one of the web hosts I mentioned above, they will offer some type of support that can help you with outages, updates, and backups. However, what they don’t offer is the kind of hand-holding and care that will help you see what you’re not even aware of, but need to be.

AI as a tool versus a plan

Yes, AI can build your business website. It can also be helpful with maintenance tasks, but it isn’t a maintenance plan. It doesn’t own outcomes, doesn’t monitor continuously, and doesn’t take responsibility when something breaks — a human has to be the one steering it and catching what it misses.

I’ll leave you with a question to ponder: Can you trust AI to keep your small business website going in the long term?
